Hair Extensions in Newtown Human hair extensions are exactly what they sound like. They are made out of real, human hair from top to bottom, collected from a donor. Remy hair means all the cuticles (the outer layer of the hair) are intact, running in the same direction at the time of collection. This allows for almost no tangling and ensures that the extensions remain smooth and silky throughout their lifetime. Synthetic hair, on the other hand, is made out of various synthetic, blended fibres, and contains no human hair.

These fibres are usually very fine, plastic fibres that are manufactured to imitate real human hair. Both real and synthetic extensions come in many styles, colours, and different forms of application. The quality of synthetic fibres can vary, but they are generally stiff and move differently from human hair, so they don’t blend as well with your natural hair. They sometimes have a wiry or coarse feel to the touch. Real hair looks and feels real (because it is!) and therefore blends more naturally with your hair.

Long, voluminous locks will always be in style, but some of us need hair extensions to help us get that added length and volume we want. There are lots of questions we had about extensions about application tips, extensions for different hair types, synthetic vs natural extensions, and more, so we turned to Priscilla Valles, celebrity hairstylist (her clientele includes red carpet regulars such as Christina Aguilera, Chrissy Teigen, and Kylie Jenner, to name a few) who has her own salon at The Palms in Las Vegas, to answer our most pressing questions and tell us what to look for when hair shopping.

Halo extensions are the least invasive to your hair roots. A transparent wire sits around the crown of the head like a halo. The bottom half contains the hair, while the top half remains bare so it can be easily hidden under your own hair. Since it isn’t secured to any stands, there’s less to weight pulling on your natural locks, and it’s super easy to do yourself. While halo extensions can last up to one year if treated appropriately and not worn too often, other types of hair extensions have an earlier expiration date.

Clip-ins, sew-ins, glue-ins, and tape-ins last for about two months, according to Valles. “If you go longer, that’s when you start to see some possible damage.”Finding the right extension method will depend on budget, preference, and hair type. While fusion and tape-in extensions can be used on just about any hair texture, weaves are best suited for curly, kinky hair. “Weaving extensions are best for African-American hair, which has enough strength and texture to hold the cornrow braid,” says Chabbi.

First, confession time. I used to be a hair-extension snob; the sort of person who looked at pictures of celebrities with undisguised glee when you could see their clip-ins, who ridiculed poor colour matches and looked on with derision when fake hair hung like straggly curtains down to someone’s navel, all while thinking, “They can’t possibly think those things look real.” But then recently, things changed. I committed the ultimate hypocritical crime and got them myself. And what’s more, I love them.
